The importance of Easter to the Orthodox Church

Easter is the greatest and most sacred feast of the Orthodox Church. It is not merely a tradition, but the very heart of the Christian faith: the Resurrection of Christ. Through it, the deepest meaning of life, sacrifice, and victory over death is revealed.

For the Orthodox Christian, the Resurrection is not only a historical event but a living experience. It calls each person to spiritual rebirth—to leave behind the darkness of sin and walk toward the light of truth and love. The meaning of the Resurrection is deeply personal: it represents hope, renewal, and the assurance that life triumphs over death.

Holy Week is the spiritual journey that leads to this great day. Each service holds profound significance, from the Bridegroom Matins to the Lamentations at the Tomb and the Resurrection service. Attending these services is not simply a ritual obligation, but an opportunity for inner purification and a deeper understanding of the Divine Passion.

Through hymns, prayers, and sacred silence, the faithful are invited to live through Christ’s suffering and arrive at the joy of the Resurrection. Participation in church during Holy Week strengthens both the relationship with God and the sense of community, reminding us that faith is a shared experience.

Easter, therefore, is not just a celebration. It is an invitation to transformation, to rediscover the essence of life, and to enter into deeper communion with the Divine.
